Safety in HEAT

The Health Authority-Abu Dhabi in association with the Abu Dhabi Environment, Health and Safety Management System and the Abu Dhabi EHS Centre and sector regulatory authorities has undertaken to reduce and prevent cases of heat related illness in the workplace with a very successful program that was launched in May 2009.
The program has been running for 4 years and has had great success in reaching worksites and workers in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and elsewhere. The program materials have been redesigned for the 5th anniversary year and are available free of charge upon registration
The safety in heat program offers free awareness and educational materials to assist employers, managers and supervisors in implementing control measures in workplaces where workers are exposed to heat in summer. The aim is to help business owners, occupational health and safety officers to implement the requirements of the EHSMS regulatory framework and protect those exposed to heat stress.

Heat illness can be avoided if proper precautions are taken and workers are educated in identifying the signs of heat illness and the precautions to take to control and prevent it. Employers are encouraged to register for the Safety in Heat program by clicking on the registration link and after completing some basic information will have access to freely downloadable materials and will also be sent details on how to collect an implementation pack for your worksite to assist you in raising awareness of the dangers of heat exposure and what to do to avoid heat illness.

Any person whether a business owner, employer, supervisor or health and safety professional who is responsible for the health and safety of employees at work can decide on the best way to implement the resources prepared for the safety in heat program at their worksite to raise awareness about the dangers of heat exposure and the precautions to be taken to prevent heat illness. This can range from placing posters in the workplace, distributing pamphlets to workers and supervisors, using the materials for toolbox talks or training or showing the training videos to workers before they start work in the heat each summer.

The Safety in Heat program supplements and supports the requirements of the Abu Dhabi Environment, Health and Safety Management system (AD EHSMS) Code of practice for safety in heat and the associated Technical Guideline and should be read in conjunction with those documents for specific regulatory requirements.
